When AI sounds expert but is not
The Surface Fluency Problem
AI produces well-structured, grammatically correct, confidently stated outputs that mimic the surface characteristics of expertise. This creates a powerful illusion: fluency feels like intelligence, and confidence feels like correctness.
But simulation is not expertise. AI can blend incompatible frameworks, provide detailed answers built on wrong assumptions, and give solutions before understanding the problem—all while sounding authoritative.
Signs of Expertise Simulation
Research on expert vs. novice detection reveals specific indicators that AI is simulating rather than performing expertise:
1. Framework Blending Without Integration
- AI draws from multiple theoretical approaches without recognizing they conflict
- Example: Mixing behavioral and psychodynamic therapy techniques that rest on incompatible assumptions about human behavior
- Real experts maintain competing frameworks separately and choose between them deliberately
2. Forward-Reasoning Failure (Answers Before Diagnostics)
- AI jumps to solutions without adequate problem diagnosis
- Genuine expertise proceeds from principles to solutions; simulation works backward from goals
- Example: Recommending a marketing strategy before asking about target audience, budget, or current performance
3. Mis-Chunking of Domain Knowledge
- AI organizes information in ways that violate domain-specific patterns
- Experts perceive meaningful chunks (e.g., legal precedents grouped by underlying principle); AI may group by surface similarity
- Detection requires domain knowledge to recognize the violation
4. Premature Solutions
- AI provides detailed implementation before establishing whether the approach is sound
- Experts emphasize thorough problem understanding; simulation optimizes for appearing helpful
5. Multi-Turn Inconsistency
- Across extended conversation, AI may contradict earlier statements or shift positions without acknowledgment
- Genuine expertise maintains internal consistency; simulation optimizes per-turn plausibility
Expert vs. Novice Detection Ability
Research shows domain experts detect simulation more reliably than novices or even technical AI experts.
Experts can:
- Recognize when AI blends incompatible frameworks
- Detect violations in domain-specific knowledge organization
- Spot forward-reasoning failures and premature solutions
- Maintain dual-track assessment (content + process validity)
Novices struggle because:
- They cannot distinguish surface fluency from substantive expertise
- They anchor on AI's initial confident output and fail to question assumptions
- They copy AI instructions without independent verification
- They lack the domain knowledge needed to recognize violations
The Detection Rule
If you are not an expert in the domain, you cannot reliably detect expertise simulation. This means: do not use AI for domains where you lack expertise to verify the output.
