Module 2: Lesson 7 of 16

Module 2 · Lesson 7 – Temporal Hierarchy

Prevent mis-timed execution.

Time-Reality Misalignment

AI collapses time unless told otherwise.

When you ask for help on a problem, AI does not know if you need:

  • What to do in the next hour
  • A roadmap for the next quarter
  • A five-year vision

It guesses. And when it guesses wrong, you get correct answers at the wrong time—which still fail.

Common failure: You need today's next step, but AI gives you a long-term roadmap. Or you need structural change, but AI gives you quick hacks.

Correct answers at the wrong time still fail.

The Five Time Layers

Every task, decision, or workstream belongs to one of five time layers:

TODAY

  • What must happen in the next few hours
  • Immediate execution only
  • No planning, no roadmaps

THIS WEEK

  • What can be completed in 7 days
  • Small, contained deliverables

THIS MONTH

  • Work that requires sustained effort over weeks
  • May involve dependencies

THIS QUARTER

  • Strategic initiatives with measurable outcomes
  • Requires planning and checkpoints

PARKING LOT

  • Ideas without a committed time horizon
  • Not urgent, not scheduled
  • May never happen—and that's fine

Discipline Rules

To use Temporal Hierarchy effectively:

  • Always specify the active time layer in your prompt. Do not make AI guess.
  • Do not mix layers in one session. "Today" plus "5-year plan" creates contradiction.
  • Use Parking Lot for ideas without a committed time horizon. This prevents them from contaminating active layers.
  • Move items intentionally between layers. Never let AI decide the layer silently.

Warning Signals

You are operating in the wrong time layer if:

  • AI offers "vision" when you asked for implementation
  • You feel impressed but nothing moves this week
  • You keep revisiting the same roadmap without executing
  • Tasks feel too big for TODAY but too urgent for THIS QUARTER

When this happens, stop and re-sort.

Interactive Exercise

Sort your workload by time layer:

Here are my current tasks and projects: [List 5–15 tasks or workstreams.] 1. Sort each item into one of these layers: TODAY, THIS WEEK, THIS MONTH, THIS QUARTER, PARKING LOT. 2. Flag any items that appear to be in the wrong layer (too big for TODAY, too urgent for THIS QUARTER, etc.). 3. For each mis-layered item, tell me: - The correct layer - What I should actually do with it in the next 7 days.

Checkpoint: Proof of Understanding

Write down three tasks you are actually working on. Assign each to a time layer (Today, This Week, This Month, This Quarter, Parking Lot). Name ONE task that is currently in the wrong layer and what you will change this week to fix that.
